Wheatfield Motorcycle Chase and Crash Caught On Tape

Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Smith pursued a speeding motorcyclist on Williams Road in Wheatfield in early June, 2008. It was captured on his patrol car camera. "The next thing I saw was his headlight coming at me so I pulled into the median and activated my emergency lights. It's then I realized that the reason he's coming back at me is because his helmet flew off, that's how fast he was going," Deputy Smith said.

As the motorcycle passed the deputy, Smith turned on his sirens and made a u-turn to follow the biker. Smith says the motorcyclist then tried to take off by opening the throttle which caused the front tire to leave the ground and the driver fell off the motorcycle. The driver tried to get up but fell back down since he fractured his right leg. Smith then walked up to the driver to speak to him. "Thankfully you didn't hit your head. You know why I was trying to catch up to you... and the reason why your helmet blew off? Is because you were doing about 85 {mph}."

An ambulance was immediately called and the motorcyclist was taken to the hospital. The driver was given four tickets.

A week after this accident Deputy Smith also captured another incident on his patrol car camera. This time he was almost seriously injured when a silver vehicle crashed through a road block, hit some wires lying in the street, and pulled a telephone pole toward the deputy which tripped him. Smith was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
