Is Route 5 the new 'road rage' alley?

By Kyla Igoe

Honking horns, traffic jams, and major construction is leaving many motorists along Route 5 upset.

"I hate it. It takes me 10 minutes longer to drive downtown, I have to wake up earlier, the noises, everything is aggravating about it," said Amparo Rosa, who frequently uses Route 5 to go into downtown Buffalo. "It's the waiting in line, beeping horns, everything its out of control."

Many businesses are also frustrated with the construction and believe it could keep customers away.

"We're a small business and it's hurting us a little bit," said Daniel Perry, manager of Dug's Dive. "Giving a detour is really inconvenient to the customers. When they want to have a drink or have a meal, it takes an extra 10 minutes to drive around this."

The Department of Transportation says it currently has two projects going along Route 5, and say the minor frustration will be worth it in the end.

"It is a very frustrating process and its impossible not to disrupt traffic in some degree when your reconstructing a highway. But we ask motorists to be patient," said Susan Surdej, spokesperson for the DOT. "We're expecting good returns from our construction. As we go forward, we're going to have access to our waterfront, were going to have a family friendly destination, and a smooth riding surface on Route 5."

Both projects are expected to be completed in the next few years.
