Illegal Handicap Permit Users Face Crackdown

Don't try to park in handicapped spaces at Buffalo Bills' home games this year unless you are really handicapped. Police are cracking down on fans who abuse handicap permits.

The rule is fans who use handicapped tags to park must have the person the tag is actually issued to in the vehicle with them. Erie County Sheriff's deputies confiscated several tags at Sunday's Bills game and say fines will be imposed on violators.

"Unfortunately, we're seeing quite a bit of abuse and I hope that people think and know that even though you are an individual with a disability, its your responsibility to maintain that permit and keep it in your possesion," says Emily Kaznica of the Erie County Office for the Disabled.

The Sheriff's department has a mobile computer to help them track whether or not a person has authorization to use a handicapped tag. Over the last 10 years more than 300 permits have been confiscated.
