4,327. That's the number of petition signatures collected by supporters of Kevin Gaughan's downsizing plan in the Town of West Seneca.
"This November, West Seneca residents are going to have the opportunity to decide for themselves the shape and size of their local government," Gaughan said late Tuesday night, surrounded by his supporters.
Gaughan said he'll personally deliver the petitions to the town clerk on Wednesday.
The regionalism advocate has visited nearly every town, village and city in Erie County, asking lawmakers to reduce the size of government by eliminating the number of elected officials.
Most municipalities have resisted Gaughan's ideas, but he has found some success. The villages of North Collins and Lancaster are considering downsizing plans.
The West Seneca Town Board voted down a proposal to reduce its numbers from five to three back in July. Gaughan launched the petition drive in order to circumvent the board and put the measure on the November ballot.
