Olcott boaters rescued in waters near Toronto

Two Niagara County missing boaters are rescued about 7 miles off the Canadian shoreline near Toronto. Their pontoon boat capsized and they drifted 25 miles to the north in their life jackets. The couple left Olcott Marina, in Niagara County, on Wednesday morning to go on a 24-hour fishing trip in Lake Ontario. When they were over a day overdue, a friend alerted authorities.

The Coast Guard tried reaching Frankie Yantos and Mary Ellen Fosbrink on their cell phones. When there was no answer, several agencies launched a massive search effort. Both the American and Canadian Coast Guards had boats in the water searching for the couple, as well as three helicopters in the air. Authorities had planned on searching throughout the night, but the couple was spotted adrift in the water by the Canadian Coast Guard and they were rescued at 4:50pm.

"It was a tremendous event," said Chief Michael Miller of the Olcott Fire Department. Yantos and Fosbrink were seasoned fishermen who always wore their lifejackets and they did have a 3-day supply of food on board. Also working in their favor is the warm water temperature this time of year. The Coast Guard says Lake Ontario is at 70 degrees today, which makes it possible to survive for hours in the water. The couple was taken to a Toronto-area hospital to be checked out but are said to be doing well tonight. They are from Pennsylvania but spend the summer months in Olcott.
