BUFFALO SCHOOLS: UNION CONTRACT REACHED, DAYE SPEAKS OUT

By Steve Barber

"Who will explain to the Mckinley students why a teacher who has not been charged is being condemned. A teacher that has not had inappropriate behaviors with students", said McKinley Highschool boys basketball coach James Daye.

He made a plea for reinstatement after being placed on leave during the Jayvonna Kincannon suspension scandal. During that time allegations surfaced that Daye had an inappropriate relationship with a student in South Carolina. "The district has withheld some information that when the information comes out, this whole thing will be rectified and I will be exonerated", said Daye.

The state is investigating the allegations and Daye has not been back to school since. The district will not take up the issue until the investigation is finished and would not comment, but Daye's supporters did. "What is happening to Coach Daye is not only unfair to him, but is unfair and unkind to his family and to Mckinley Highschool", said Marylin Dixon.

A major union contract was also approved. The union representing teacher's aides, the districts second largest union, agreed to give up retroactive pay in exchange for a one time $750 signing bonus. They also went to one healthcare provider. The move will pay for raises through 2012. "If you come to the table then we can continue to work at an agreement. You can get an agreement, but within the structure of our finances. Thats what I encourage the administrators to do as well as the teachers", said Superintendent Dr. James Williams.

Teachers and bus aides are among the unions still without a deal. The bus aides, who say they don't get medical benefits, or sick time, also say they haven't had a raise in 5 years. They walked away unhappy. "You got some people that do the same job that we do that start out at $9.05 an hour. Top pay for us is $9.05 an hour and I've been here almost 20 years. It's not enough", said union representative Betty Martin.
