Neighbors Come Together Following Death of Young Girl

By John Borsa

It's not what you might expect after the loss of a young life, but neighbors threw a block party on Hagen Street on Wednesday night to help them heal following the violent death of a young girl.

"Calling all parents and calling all kids," resident Nafeesah Woods said as she grilled hamburgers and sausage on a grill. "We got to learn to hug each other and stop hurting each other."

And that's exactly what they're trying to do.

On Tuesday night, 14-year-old Nancylia Salter was shot and killed after someone opened fire into a crowd of young children. Her friend, 13-year-old Jayvon Ingram was injured, grazed by the gunfire.

"No kid on this block slept last night," said Darrick Smith, another Hagen Street resident. "A lot of parents didn't sleep last night because of a senseless killing."

Buffalo police continue to search for suspects in the case.

On Thursday night, the community will gather at the scene once again, this time for a candlelight prayer vigil. It starts at 6 p.m.
