Buffalo Community Outraged After Shooting Kills Another Teen

By Jennifer Stanonis

A community is very upset by more violence in their Buffalo neighborhood as flowers and stuffed animals mark the spot where two teens were shot Tuesday evening at 8:30 pm in front of a house on the 200 block of Hagen Street near East Delavan. 14 year old Nancylia Salter was fatally shot and her friend 13 year old Jevon Ingram was injured. Ingram is now back at home recovering from his wounds after being released from the hospital. "My son was grazed in the arm and the back and thank god..." Ingram's father said. "He had bullet fragments in his t-shirt so that means he was right there, he was right there!"

Police say it's believed the two teens were near a group of young people who were arguing and about to fight each other when at least three shots were fired. "I'm not sure if the victims were part of the group arguing... we have no indication that anyone in that group had any weapons," Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. "Mostly girls arguing in the street and someone who may have had a relationship with some of these young ladies... came from somewhere and started firing down the street."

A roadside memorial continues to grow at the location of the shooting. Also, many area residents were meeting with each other during Wednesday to discuss making some changes to the neighborhood including working more with authorities and organizing a block club to help stop the violence. "Stop the violence save our kids" was heard often by several people throughout the day, chanting with signs in hand. "I talked to a few people and they say they're interested in it because we have to do something about protecting our streets," one area resident said.

Police continue to search for three 'persons of interest'. It's believed these three youths fled on bikes from a block away from the shooting location Tuesday evening and may have seen something or may be involved.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Buffalo Police confidential TIPCALL hotline at 847-2255.

The police department says statistically the city is down seven homicides from the same time last year.
