Construction suspended on Casino
The announcement comes just a day after a Judge puts the future of the Buffalo Creek Casino in the hands of the National Indian Gaming Commission, after ruling gambling is illegal at the site. But according to Gaming Corporation officials, one has nothing to do with the other.
"These decisions are not made overnight," said Phil Pantano of the Seneca Gaming Corporation. Pointing to the economy, construction costs, and market conditions, the Seneca Nation is suspending construction on the Buffalo Creek Casino and Hotel, and the Seneca Allegany Casino and Hotel. The Buffalo Creek Casino is a $333 million dollar project, with an all suite hotel. 7 News asked Pantano if he expects this projects to be completed as planned. "We have every intention of continuing and completing construction of this project, as well as the project at Seneca Allegany Casino and Hotel at the appropriate time," said Pantano Seneca Gaming Corporation Chairman Barry Snyder said, "We look forward to resuming and completing construction of these two world class projects at the appropriate time. " There is no date scheduled, and they say they will continue to look at the economy. There are about 150 people on the job. Officials say they are union workers and are hopeful they will be put to work somewhere else. Meantime, Mayor Byron Brown issued a statement this afternoon, saying "I still believe that this $333 million project, which will create over 1,000 jobs, will be a benefit to the city of Buffalo and I look forward to working with the Seneca Nation to get the project back up and running. " Erie County Executive Chris Collins is also a casino proponent and we asked if he is confident this will get done. "I am the eternal optimist and the answer is yes. But today's announcement was very disappointing. 150 people lost their jobs and certainly the community now has reason to be concerned whether it is going to go forward," said Collins. |
