A 12-year-old girl fell into the fast-rushing waters of the Niagara River on Wednesday afternoon, launching a massive search and rescue operation.

The girl was sitting on a rock when she slipped into the water, according to New York State Parks Police. The girl is part of a downstate Polish-Catholic church group that was touring the Niagara Gorge led by a tour guide.

"Unfortunately when she slipped in the water, there was no chance for anyone in her group to reach out to her," said Lt. Patrick Moriarty.

Almost two dozen members of the church group helplessly watched the young girl get pulled away by the current.

"No one was close enough to do it," Moriarty said. "Once you hit the water, the water is moving quickly. She tried to grab onto a rock near shore but was unable to do so."

At least three helicopters are aiding in the search, which will continue until dusk. Police might keep a few boats on the water during the overnight, Moriarty said.
