Erie County announces Veteran Burial Program

Erie County announces Veteran Burial Program

By Kyla Igoe

Erie County Executive Chris Collins announced a new collaboration today to help ensure proper burials for veterans who would otherwise not be able to afford it.
The new collaboration is between the county, the Office of Veterans Service, Mount Calvary Cemetery Group and the Jewish Family Service of Buffalo and Erie County. The program is for impoverished veterans and is free of charge.

"We're here to announce just another way that our community is coming together and honoring Erie County's veterans," said Collins. "Sadly, veterans end up dying without savings or a strong family connection. Despite personal circumstances, all veterans deserve the honor of a proper burial and memorial."

According to the county, Erie County identifies the veterans in need of a burial. The veterans will then have their cremated remains buried in the Veterans Cemetery section at Pine Lawn Cemetery. In keeping with the Jewish faith, Jewish veterans will be buried at local Jewish cemeteries.
