The West Seneca Town Board approved a measure to spend at least $188,000 to remove mold from the town's Union Road hockey rink.

But before work can begin, the town will seek a contractor who can perform the work faster and cheaper. That means the youth hockey season might not start on time this year, said league organizers.

The season is scheduled to begin on September 1.

Town officials tried to convince parents that the hockey season will begin as planned, but parents are skeptical.

The rink has been closed since mid-May after the mold was detected and the building deemed unsafe for patrons.
