Downtown Buffalo's New Illegal Party Zone

By John Borsa

Thursday at the Square in downtown Buffalo. It's one big happy hour party with music, food and fun.

But now there's a party outside the party and Buffalo police are taking a closer look at some of the illegal fun that's been going on in parking lots and the streets surrounding Lafayette Square.

"They're not the problem, the ones inside the event," said Buffalo police deputy commissioner Daniel Derenda. "The problem is outside the event."

That's where a 7 News undercover camera spent two Thursday nights roving through downtown. We found people with open containers of alcohol, drug use and concert-goers using downtown parking lots to tail-gate.

"We're aware of the issues and no they can't. We have been addressing them. We've been writing summonses. We've been breaking them up," Derenda said.

Buffalo Place, the organizer of Thursday at the Square, points out there are few problems inside the event at Lafayette Square.

"The parking lots are clearly privately operated," said Steven Joseph, spokesman for Buffalo Place. "We do not operate parking lots in downtown Buffalo."

Derenda said additional units will be assigned to patrol the area on Thursday nights.
