Control Boards Stay
Governor Paterson makes his way through Buffalo, an area that will continue to have two control boards. It appears he will not sign two bills to reduce their powers.
"At this time with the tremendous blight we are going to suffer as a result of the economic hardship that is headed toward this state, I would want the control board to continue for a period of time," said Paterson. That means that the county control board will still need to sign off on money the county wants to borrow. There has been no borrowing for capital projects since 2006. Erie County Executive Chris Collins saying in a statement "Governor paterson has shown he is not interested in following the will of the people and the leaders they elect, but rather empowering a state appointed authority." Legislature Chairwoman Lynn Marinelli also expressing disappointment in the decision in a statement. Meantime, Chairman Anthony Baynes, who threatened to resign if the bill was signed, is staying. "I am asking them now to sit down with the control board and start from scratch and figure out when they want us to borrow this money," said Baynes. A Collins spokesman says collins has always been willing to meet with members of the control board. The city control board will also stay as is. The Mayor has spoken to the Governor. "I respect his process and I respect his decision. Now it is up to us in buffalo to move forward," said Mayor Brown. The city control board issuing a statement today. Part of it saying, "It is a good thing that we can put this issue behind us and get back to moving forward with the taxpayers business." |
