You may remember John Gurtler as the voice of the Buffalo Sabres. For 11 years he was their play-play man. Now, he is the voice of the Buffalo Bandits and the public address announcer for Buffalo Bills. According to Orchard Park Police, Gurtler, his wife, and his son were all arrested for providing alcohol to minors at post prom this weekend. "It was big. It was big." said Assistant Chief Ted Gura.
Orchard Park assistant police chief Ted Gura tells 7 News police got a tip at the high school post prom event that there was a party at Gurtler's home on Orchard Terrace. When they arrived they heard loud music and teenagers scattered. Some, police say, were heard running or swimming in a near-by pond to get away. "Upon arrival they estimated between 70 and 80 teenagers between 20 and 30 immediately fled." said Gura.
Police also found more than 150 open containers of alcohol in the back yard, and thats not all. "The report says we see several beer kegs and we observed the teens pouring beer from some of the kegs." said Gura.
Several other police agencies were called in to round up all the teens. Police confiscated 49 pieces of identification from underage kids. Even the school district got involved They released a statement to 7 News saying, "The high school administration is investigating as are the police in Orchard Park. The incident happened off campus at Freeman Pond. Approximately 75 students were involved. The Orchard Park Police, East Aurora Police and State Police were called in to assist."
For police, it is a post prom nightmare that leaves them scratching their heads. "I don't know what they're thinking. I really don't know what they're thinking." said Gura.
Gurtler responded late Monday night telling 7 News he and his family have been through enough, and they want to be left alone. Gurtler will be arraigned July 3rd. Police also tell 7 News the investigation is continuing and more arrests and charges could be coming.
