Smoke Warning For West Side

Smoke Warning For West Side

By Steve Barber

Clouds of smoke billow into the sky and head west, blowing a blanket over the west side of Buffalo. Judy Gozdalski lives on Auburn Avenue. The view from her front porch wasn't good. "It's very smoky and it's hard to see. It's even hard to see even across the street. It's the wind thats picking it up." said Gozdalski.

It was the same for her neighborhood Lee Fong. He was more than a little concerned about smoke and pool chemicals in the air. "I try to move everybody back in the house, get inside and don't get sick." said Fong.

The entire area was under a warning to get inside and shut windows. Matt Tice spent most of his time getting kids off the street. "There's a lot of kids out and we don't want them out breathing the smoke and everything." said Tice.

ECMC emergency room doctor David Ellis was aware of the fire and what might be coming into the E-R. The area, he says, has a high concentration of people who suffer from asthma. "The people we worry about most are the people with underlying lung disease, people with chronic obstructive disease, people with asthma. When they get exposed to smoke or air with a particulate in it; it will cause a worsening of their condition." said Ellis.

It's a real problem for Judy and her neighbors who have been in the smoke for hours. "It's getting hard to breathe. It's almost like a plastic burning type substance." she said.
