Standoff Ends Peacefully

A gunman who caused a tense standoff with police Monday night is now in police custody.
SWAT team officers were able to get to the gunman's car just before 9 o'clock this evening, after an hour-long standoff near the Ontario Street exit of the 190.
The entire ordeal began just after 6 o'clock this evening, with what witnesses say appeared to be a domestic dispute. They say they saw the man driving southbound on the 190 from the Grand Island area heading into Buffalo, when a woman jumped out of the man's white pickup truck. They say the woman fled the vehicle and appeared to be okay. At that point, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at a state trooper.
Officers moved in quickly, closing the 190 in both directions, leaving hundreds of cars and trucks stuck on the highway. Coast Guard officers cleared all boats away from the shore.
The entire ordeal, coming to a peaceful end as officers used special techniques to distract the gunman as they moved in.
The gunman was then taken into custody and placed in an ambulance. We're told he will be taken to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation.
Still no word on the man's identity tonight.
