Police Interview Person of Interest In Lancaster Double Fatal

By Jenny Rizzo

Police believe a possible drag race may be the reason for a senseless tragedy that killed a young couple in Lancaster. Tonight detectives spent several hours questioning a witness in the case, who they are calling a "person of interest."

Andy Harhigh is the father of one of the crash victims. "We don't know what exactly happened. The car looked very bad. He just got the car 3 days ago."

The Mustang was Mark Harhigh's dream car. He was headed home with Melanie Page, his long time girlfriend, when the accident happened on Transit Road around 10:30pm last night. Witnesses tell police a second car was racing with Harhigh, a small black car, possibly a Dodge Neon. Tonight Tonight Lancaster Police interviewed a person of interest in the case. Officer Rick Albert said, "His vehicle matched the description given by other witnesses. We are also in the process of talking to passengers in his vehicle."

Police are not releasing the name of the man but we do know that he is from Lancaster. He came to the police station voluntarily after investigators tracked down his car. They looked at his vehicle and determined that it did not come into physical contact with Harhigh's Mustang. But police still need to fill in some of the blanks from last night so they are asking the public to come forward if anyone witnessed what happened. Albert said, "Did someone pull out in front of the car? Was there a mechanical malfunction? That's what we're trying to determine at this point."

And its not just police that are wanting more information on what went wrong here. "I just hope that person will come through and let us know exactly so we can have peace of mind," said Toni Harhigh, Mark's mother.

Police say the person of interest is not being charged with anything at this point. They are just talking to him and others to determined his level of culpability, if there is any. If you saw anything or know anything about this accident, please call Lancaster Police at 683-2800.

Mark's family has set up a donation fund called the Mark Harhigh Memorial Fund. Since Mark had just started a new job, he was not covered by health insurance at the time of the accident. Anyone who wishes to contribute can write a check and drop it off at any Citizens Bank in Western New York.
