WNY Soldier Back in U.S.

A Western New York soldier is getting closer to coming home after being stranded in the middle east. Her trip home has been delayed because an airline went bankrupt.

Unfortunately, Captain Sharron Oleniacz won't make it home in time for Mother's Day. But the good news is that she is finally in the United States.

The long journey home is almost over. After a 90-day tour of duty in Iraq, the nurse anesthetist from Jamestown is finally on U-S soil. "We received word this morning that she arrived in Mississippi after some delays in Kuwait," said U.S. Representative Brian Higgisn, D-NY.

Oleniacz and over 100 other service members were scheduled to return home last weekend, but were held up in Kuwait. The charter airline was contracted to bring the troops home, ATA, went bankrupt, cancelling its flights in April.

"Somebody must've known about this and this is not a new thing that's happening," Oleniacz told WBEN 930 in a recent interview. "There's one Freedom Flight out and several other flights. But there's not enough flights to get the people out of here -- who have done their duty, including myself."

Oleniacz also talked about the tent city she and the others were stranded at in Kuwait. "There's mice running around and it's dirty. There's no warm water. The water is lukewarm. It's just not right that our servicemembers are treated like this."

When Congressman Brian Higgins first found out about the situation, he started making phone calls and writing letters...trying to find a way to get the troops home. "I think concurrently we have to look to the State Department and to the Department of Defense to make some changes to ensure that these soldiers aren't detained after they've completed their tour of duty," said Higgins.

Captain Oleniacz is expected to arrive at Ft. Benning, Georgia Friday evening. She has to spend several days there before she can return home. That's expected to happen next Thursday.
