Bus Driver Faces Allegations

By Julie Fine

These are allegations that have shocked many in the Town of Warsaw, that a school bus driver allegedly inappropriately touched a child.

"It is sad. We are better than this," said resident Brian Schell.

It is not what many parents and grandparents of students in the Warsaw Central School District expected to hear. A school bus driver--64 year old Alan Hamann, on the job for a year--facing charges of first degree sexual abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child.

"It was devastating. It was really terrible," said resident Terry Lanni.

Officials saying a group of students alerting the assistant principal to a situation on a bus, and the school district contacted law enforcement. They say a child was hit on the head, so they began interviewing all the other students on the bus. That is when they found out about alleged sexual abuse, with a child under 11 years old.

"We are not getting any indication it is widespread it is certainly, we be remiss, if we did not interview every child on that bus potentially as a victim or as a witness ," said State Police Captain John Hibsch.

Hamann is out of jail on 20 thousand dollars bail. There was no answer at his home today. Officials saying he passed all background checks for the job. Meantime, the school district has been in contact with the families of the students on the bus, and are offering any services needed for any students in the school. They are working with first students, reviewing their personnel procedures, and driver safety program. All families of students received a letter about what happened, and what steps the district are taking.

"We take our students safety very seriously, and would never want our kids to in any type of situation like this," said Superintendent Kevin McGowan.

First student saying they are cooperating with authorities and have an internal investigation, adding "termination of the driver is pending the outcome of the investigation."
