Canoe overturns in Niagara River; two rescued by good samaritans

Two canoeists were rescued from the Niagara River Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say 34 year old Brian Mahoney and 36 year old Charles Feraci were canoeing just off shore of Grand Island when their canoe flipped over; sending both men into the frigid waters.
Grand Island residents Barry Arbogast and his son Cory witnessed the accident and quickly reacted by jumping into a small rowboat and rowing into the river to rescue the victims.

The victims were in the water for about 25 minutes before they were were guided back to shore by the Arbogasts. Authorities were standing by on shore to assist; both men were taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital and treated for hypothermia.

Officials say both men were wearing life jackets.
