Buffalo Police Alert Drivers of Potential Gang Crimes

By Jennifer Stanonis

Many people are on alert after the Buffalo Police Department sent out a safety warning to drivers. A new gang in the area may have gang initiation activities in the city of Buffalo and surrounding communities, which includes the entire Western New York area. "They are considered very very dangerous... they are typically very well armed," Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson said Wednesday evening.

At least two other police departments in different states that received a similar warning didn't send out an alert, including the police departments in Tallahassee, Florida and Fayetteville, North Carolina. The spokesperson of the Fayetteville Police Department told 7 NEWS the warning information couldn't be confirmed in their area.

The Buffalo Police Department says they received credible information about the potential gang activity in the Western New York area during Wednesday afternoon and just want the public to be aware of the risk.

It's believed those trying to get in the gang have to hit a car possibly from behind and then harm the driver by assault or robbery, or maybe even worse. "Potentially anything... could be the victim of a robbery, victim of an assault... whether with a gun or cutting instrument, or anything," Commissioner Gipson said.

Extra police crews were out across the area Wednesday night. Police say if your car does get hit, stay in your car and call 9-1-1. If you're in a dark, quiet location drive to a well lit and populated area. Also it may be safer to not pull over and keep driving around until police arrive.

Buffalo police wouldn't release the name of the gang but 7 NEWS confirmed with multiple sources that the gang is called MS- 13, and is labeled the most dangerous gang in America by the FBI.

As of Thursday early afternoon, the Buffalo Police Department reported no gang related incidents.
