Struggling with the Economy

By Julie Fine

The line at Airport Plaza Jewelers is out the door today. The price of gold is up, while the economy is not. So this is where some people turn to help make ends meet. West Seneca Resident Janet Fronczek is hoping to put a down payment on a home, selling a rolex watch and a diamond engagement ring to help with some of her expenses.

"I do have a job which does not cut it with the price of gas. I drive from West Seneca to Grand Island to work," said Fronczek

The owner is familiar with people like Janet, looking to make some money to help make ends meet. They also see people who are selling not because they are in dire straits, but would just like a little extra cash flow. This at a time when the economy is in trouble. Senator Charles Schumer addressing that today at a speech in front of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership. He speaks of the housing crisis with foreclosures, reducing dependence on foreign oil, and the need for more jobs. Schumer is hoping to take business leaders to meet with financial services for back office services, so that there are more high paying jobs in the area. He is hopeful that tax rebates help in the short term. In the meantime, Western New Yorkers like Janet, who work and raise kids, hope that there are better times ahead, and echo what many residents think.

"I think some of our property taxes could go down, and the thruway tolls can go down quite a bit. Hopefully more people can find jobs here," she added.
