David Paterson is being referred to by many tonight as the "accidental" governor. While it is an unexpected situation, some people believe he's the right man at the right time.
Paterson's rise to power is unprecedented. And while he seems to be well liked by people on both sides of the political aisle, New York's new Governor may not have risen to this position in an election. "Probably not. He's a liberal's liberal. And I think a lot of people would've been reluctant to embrace someone who was both blind and African American," said Dr. Henry Taylor, Jr., President of the Center for Urban Studies at the University at Buffalo.
But Paterson has shown he's been able to overcome those obstacles. Taylor believes Paterson has what it takes to overcome the scandal of Spitzer's downfall. "I think that the challenges that he has faced has made him a person that is ideal for the current situation," said Taylor.
Paterson was at the Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired to celebrate its 100th anniversary last October. "People are focusing on his visual impairment and I think what we really need to focus on is his vision," said President Ron Maier. He remembers Paterson's lighter side. "He has a fascinating great sense of humor and he also has a feel for the audience. People were mesmerized here."
That sense of humor evident in Paterson's inaugural speech. And with his theme of working together, Paterson is setting a new stage for the next three years. "I think it's an opportunity that will be probably look back on and say that it was a great turning point in New York State," said Taylor.
