DMV worker arrested

DMV worker arrested

By Melanie Pritchard

Some people say teenagers these days look older than they really are. A auto bureau worker is facing 7 years in prison charged with helping kids make themselves seem older on legal identification.

A month long undercover investigation at the Erie County Auto Bureau's office in downtown Buffalo ended with the arrest of a 24 year old woman. Latasha Colbert is accused of selling fake ID's to teenagers...altering their dates of birth so they could appear older to get into strip clubs or casinos. "It came to our attention from the parent of a 14 year old who came in and told one of our supervisors at the downtown auto bureau that her daughter had paid 50 dollars to someone and received a change in her license to show that she was older," said Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul.

Hochul says she wanted to fire Colbert on the spot, but state investigators asked her to hold off so they could set up the sting operation. Colbert was nabbed last Wednesday when she agreed to change a birth date in exchange for 100 dollars. Hochul says there was no way of knowing what Colbert was up to. "We don't have access to that information. So I don't have anyway to track whether or not there's a spike in a certain kind of an amendment from a certain employee." She's now asking the state DMV to give more information to local auto bureaus so they can identify unusual activity.

Colbert was released on $1,500 dollars bail following her weekend arraignment. We went to her house this afternoon but she wasn't there. Her uncles told us they're concerned about Colbert's 8 year old son. "She's an intelligent person. Whatever mistakes she made, I don't want to see her pay real harshly for it because I don't want my nephew to suffer," said Roland.

"All I can do is pray for her. We don't have control over the situation. Now it's in the hands of God and it's in the hands of the justice system," said Noland. The uncles did not want to give their last names.

Hochul hopes the case sends a message to all county employees. "If you're going to break the law, you're going to be caught."

Erie County District Attorney Frank Clark says the teens involved probably won't face charges but investigators want to know if Colbert did this more often and if anyone else was involved in the scheme. "It is of concern to all of us that they weren't acting on their own. I mean they just didn't think this up. There was somebody behind them who was ordering them and directing them to do what they did," said Clark.

Colbert is scheduled for a felony hearing in Buffalo City Court February 13th.
