$33 Million in Federal Earmarks Coming to WNY

By John Borsa

Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton announced $33 million in federal funds earmarked for Western New York. The money is part of a spending bill signed by President Bush on Wednesday.

A dozen local projects will benefit from the money. The biggest chunk of cash, $27 million, will be used to construct new facilities at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

$2.5 million will help with improvements at Niagara Falls International Airport. Local officials see the underused facility as a key component for economic development. The cash will increase access to the terminal so large cargo aircraft can use the airport.

In the City of Tonawanda, remediation efforts have been underway for about a year at the former Spaulding Fibre site. Now, the project is getting an infusion of $1 million to clear the site for new development.

Mayor Brown's plan to install dozens of surveillance cameras in the City of Buffalo is being funded with $535,800. More than 60 cameras will be installed at intersections, high-crime areas and other spots.

$574,000 will go to Hunter's Hope Foundation to establish the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute inside the University at Buffalo's Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. The institute will coordinate research initiatives to find a cure for Krabbe Disease.
