One elderly Lewiston man has his local post office to thank for not losing out on $850 dollars thanks to a mail scam.

Diana Whetstine and her boss, Postmaster Patrick Madigan received the Postmaster General Hero Award for preventing mail scam after noticing their customer was in the process of converting cash into a money order which he was attempting to mail as pre-payment for a supposed lottery win.

Whetstine says, these kind of scams happen all the time and that it's important to look out for the elderly because they are often taken advantage of.

Everyday, thousands of Americans receive notification they have won a prize in a contest they never entered and end up losing out on hard earned savings.

Madigan says, to avoid scammers, consider if something seems too good to be true, it likely is.
