Garlock's Restaurant, a landmark dining destination in downtown Lockport for 72 years, has closed its doors for good.

Managers of several longtime restaurants in Lockport say they weren't entirely surprised to see Garlock's shut its doors after 72 years.

For those who have a gift certificate to the restaurant, the Better Business Bureau says when independent restaurants close down, oftentimes that money goes away.

But there may be a solution. You can file a complaint on the Lockport Better Business Bureau page, which will determine if you can get your money back. A spokesperson says the BBB is aware of the closing and ready to field complaints.

"It is with a very heavy heart that effective today June 5, 2018 we will be closed," said a post on the restaurant's Facebook page. "We would like to thank all of our customers both near and far that we will truly miss."

Gig "Giggy" Garlocks opened the namesake restaurant on Gooding Street in 1946. It moved to its South Transit Road location, overlooking the Erie Canal, in 1962 and became known for its open steak sandwich.

"Thank you for all of the support throughout the years," management said in their farewell post. "The love and appreciation to our employees for the past 72 years, we became family and life long friends. Thank you all for the great memories!!"
