Consumer reports says you may want to ditch your child's winter coat when putting them into their car seat because it may be too loose to be effective in the event of a crash.

The Hacic family says it's already an every day routine. Hilary and Greg, of Lakeview, have three kids and are expecting twins.

Hilary Hacic says she always takes her kids' coats off before putting them into their car seats and leaving the drive way.

"Even if it is a short trip, a long trip, no matter how cold it is," she said.

Consumer reports says if the car seat is too loose it can make your child jerk forward and even fly out of the seat during a crash.

"The jacket is so puffy it doesn't allow the straps of the car seat to sit tight to keep him as safe as possible," Hacic said.
