LAWRENCE, KS (WKBW) – Clarence native Nicholas Sardina, 27, died Saturday at his apartment near Kansas University. Police are now investigating and are not ruling out the possibility that it could be a homicide.
“He was in Iraq, you know, survived that and comes here and he had bigger aspirations than to die like that,” Roommate Chris Nelson said.
Chris Nelson still can’t believe his roommate Nicholas Sardina died over the weekend. Police said on Saturday, they went to his apartment and found him unresponsive. Sardina was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators tell us that former KU student and Kansas National Guard Service Member, who also served three tours of duty in Iraq, was injured hours early in a fight.
Investigators are now trying to determine if the altercation played a part in his death. Detectives have identified several people involved in this fight but no arrests have been made.
“It's just, you know, I want answers to know what happened, ya know. It is just weird that his room is empty now, full of his stuff. It's kind of strange. He was the person who was in charge, responsible very, very hard worker,” Nelson said.
So far police are questioning the others involved in the fight to see exactly what happened and are also waiting for autopsy results. Sardina’s body has been flown back to Western New York. A wake will be held Thursday afternoon at Sliwinski Funeral Home on Transit Road. His funeral is scheduled for Friday morning.
