A nod to Lockport's golden era has found a new home in the heart of history in the Lock City.

The Erie Traveler, an historic recreation of an early Erie Canal commercial vessel, was lowered by crane into its new home Thursday in the Flight of Five Locks.

The 50-foot long boat was completed Tuesday at the Buffalo Maritime Center, where more than 40 volunteers spent the last six months building the eight-ton wooden boat.

Vessels such as the Traveler were used to transport freight in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Its arrival coincides with the 200th anniversary of the start of construction of the Erie Canal.

The Erie Traveler will be dedicated at the annual Lock Tender Tribute in the Lockport Locks on Saturday at 5 p.m.
