(WKBW/ABC) Millions take prescription drugs called statins to lower cholesterol, but what about using natural supplements?
One of the most popular is red yeast rice, which recorded sales of 20-million dollars in 2008, but a new study is raising the red flag.
Researchers found the compounds in red yeast rice that actually lower cholesterol are found in varying amounts from product to product.
They also found high levels of a fungus that can grow on rice in most of the products.
Researchers say the FDA does not regulate these supplements, and they urge doctors to be cautious recommending them to patients.
