(WKBW) Good news for the local medical community, and more importantly, the nearly 2000 people across Western New York with kidney disease who rely on dialysis to survive.

A symbolic ceremony held today to mark the first phase of the new Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care.

A 31-foot girder signed by those involved in this project was hoisted to the top of the building located on Grider Street in Buffalo.

Erie County Medical Center and Kaleida Health joined forces on this 27-million dollar center that once complete, will house 36 dialysis units and medical offices.

The facility is expected to be completed by December of this year.
