Federal health officials announcing today access to the controversial diabetes drug, Avandia, will be restricted.

Patients in the United States will be allowed to take the medicine only if they and their doctors agree it's the most effective medicine for them, and they are aware of the drug's substantial risks to the heart.

GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia's maker, has long defended its drug as safe and a needed option for diabetics.
