(WKBW/Cleveland Clinic) Colic can be miserable for both baby and the parents. Researchers have been studying it for years, but no one has figured out what causes it and that makes treatment difficult.

Now, a new study found some herbal remedies may help make a difference.

The report finds that giving your baby fennel extract, certain herbal teas, or sugar water may be effective in relieving symptoms of colic, making them more comfortable and crying a little bit less.

Fennel is believed to aid digestion and sugar water helps relieve pain.

Pediatricians say all of them are generally safe, and in some cases, would recommend they be given either in a dropper or by putting a small amount in a bottle, but talk to your doctor first to find what works best for you and your baby.

Doctors say colic usually starts at about three weeks old, and for the most part, babies grow out of colic in time.
