(WKBW) U.S. News and World report surveyed nearly 10,000 specialists and examined data for almost 5,000 hospitals to rank the best in 16 adult specialties, from cancer to urology.

Death rates, patient safety, and hospital reputation were a few of the factors considered.

The rankings are done nationally and by region.

Here in the Buffalo area, three hospitals did well enough to rank.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is the number one hospital in Buffalo, Buffalo General, including Women and Children's is number two and Sisters of Charity is ranked number three in Buffalo.

Women and Children's Hospital made the national rankings in two pediatric specialties: it ranked number 46 out of the top 50 hospitals in pediatric cancer and number 48 out of 50 in pediatric neurology and neurosurgery.

Buffalo General and Women and Children's were also high performing in three specialties: ear, nose and throat, neurology and neurosurgery and geriatrics.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is nationally ranked for cancer, number 27 out of 50 hospitals. That's up from number 33 last year.

It was also high performing in ear, nose and throat, gynecology and urology.

Sister's Hospital was high performing in ear, nose and throat, but it did not rank nationally.
