Going On A Diet? Keep It A Secret!

(WKBW/Cleveland Clinic) If dieting is on your list of resolutions this year, keep it a secret.

Some experts say spilling the beans about your weight loss plans could have a detrimental effect.

According to Registered Dietitian Tara Harwood of the Cleveland Clinic, you have to be very particular who you choose to tell. She says make sure they are people who are going to encourage you and not hinder you and your success.

A New York University study looked at the difference between announcing your intention to lose weight versus keeping your goals quiet.

The study found if you tell people you plan to lose 15 pounds, and they recognize your good intention, you no longer feel the need to follow through with exercise or healthy eating because you already feel good about yourself.

Dietitians say a good way to figure out what you should do, or who you should tell, is by looking at the past.

Harwood says," If every single year around New Year's
you told every single person your resolutions, and it didn't work,
maybe you should try something different. Keep it to yourself. Tell one or two key people, letting those people actually encourage you and help you along the way and maybe this year you'll meet your goals."
