(WKBW/ABC News) One way to a healthier heart is to lower your salt intake.

Too much sodium can increase the risk of high blood pressure, which is a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

The CDC found that nearly half the sodium Americans eat in a day comes from ten foods, and surprisingly, bread and rolls are at the top of the list.

Bread and rolls account for twice as much salt intake as potato chips and pretzels----not because they are saltier, but because people eat more of them.

The second source of sodium is processed foods such as cold cuts and cured meats.

Pizza, poultry and soups round out the top five.

Next on the list is fast-food hamburgers and sandwiches, followed by cheese, spaghetti and other pastas.

Number nine is meat dishes such as meatloaf.

Chips and pretzels are at the bottom of the CDC list.

CDC officials did not tell people to stop eating bread, but they do
recommend they check labels and choose those with low sodium.
