BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) Jim Kelly continues to fight cancer. His surgery, originally scheduled for this week has been cancelled. Kelly is in New York City, where his doctors feel chemotherapy and radiation are the best treatment for him.

To learn more about his particular type of cancer, we reached out locally to doctors at CCS Oncology.

“You never want to face a patient where you are treating a recurrence, but oncologists face this issue and a vast number of patients have a good result,” said Dr. Kandala Chary, CCS Oncology.

Jim Kelly’s doctors determined this week that surgery was not an option. Doctor Chary, who is not treating Kelly, says that if the cancer is in one spot, treatment will be most effective.

“If it is highly localized, one has to be very hopeful, at the same time objective,” said Chary. “Cures are certainly possible.”

According to Dr. Chary, head and neck cancer comes in many stages. In stages one and two, surgery is the best treatment option. In stages three and four, the cancer may have spread to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body.

“If it is highly localized, 50% of today’s patients can be salvaged and the other 50% may have a tough time,” said Chary.
