A HAZMAT team was on site at Materian Advanced Materials in the Town of Wheatfield Monday morning. The company is located on Lockport Road.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, a chemical reaction happened when a metal was placed in an acidic solution for cleaning. The facility security team observed yellow smoke coming from the solution. The team was able to contain the smoke to one room and exhaust it through a vent outside of the building.
Materian's owner, Joseph Kwiatkowski, said the company activated their evacuation procedure and their in-house HAZMAT team responded to the incident. Meanwhile, people in the immediate surrounding area were advised to shelter in place by Niagara County Dispatch and Town of Niagara Police Officers.
Responders from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Fire Department made sure that any dangerous fumes had been properly removed from the building and to monitor the remaining tanks.
