Grocery stores including Tops Friendly Markets and Wegmans are seeing crowds flock to stores after the bad weather delayed Thanksgiving preparation.
Tops officials said they plan to see a near record breaking number of people and they are getting ready. Workers are stocking shelves with everything from fruit to turkey, stuffing and sides.
Last week, the trucks that deliver food to their Lancaster warehouses were delayed due to weather. Overall, they had a lull in deliveries but not in customers. Katie McKenna with the store said they had a lot of foot traffic and expect their usual holiday crowds and more this week.
The harsh weather also slowed donations to those who need it most. Tops Friendly Markets will be joining the Buffalo Sabres for a Thanksgiving turkey drive on Wednesday, Nov. 26, to benefit local food pantries.
The turkey drive will take place from 6-9 a.m. at their location at 890 Young St. Tonawanda and First Niagara Center. For every 20-pound turkey dropped off, or the equivalent of a 20-pound turkey, the Sabres will give away two tickets to an upcoming game to the donor.
All of the donated turkeys will directly benefit the Buffalo City Mission and the Food Bank of Western New York.
