It all started as Kirk Miller's April fool’s joke on Facebook.
“I'll say ok: I’m in JFK and then I'm in Paris.”
But now, it’s turned into the hope of breaking a Guinness World Record. The 65-year-old and his friend, John Burnham, are trying to make the fastest trip by a commercial airline to six continents. “All I have to do is land the plane, on each continent, get out of the plane, and get back on a different plane.”
The pair’s itinerary is as follows: Bangkok, Australia, Los Angeles, Columbia, Madrid, Cairo, and back to Bangkok. They’re hoping to make it in 64 hours and change. The record stands at 66 hours and 31 minutes.
“My wife thinks I'm crazy for doing this,” Miller said.
Planning to break a world record is one thing, but proving it is another. No one from the Guinness Book of World Records will be accompanying the men on their trip. So they'll have to document everything.
"We have to have witness forms, copies of the airline tickets, copies of boarding passes. The pilot, co-pilot and chief attendant have to sign off on it. They want video. They want pictures,” Miller explained.
So why go through all this trouble? Miller said it's worth it if it makes him cooler in the eyes of his grandchildren. “John and I are both collecting social security and it's probably about the only Guinness Record we could do anymore. It’s not like we're going to climb Everest five or six times in a row.”
