TONAWANDA, NY ( WKBW ) Middle school students from 23 local schools showed off their plans for the future on Saturday in the Western New York "Future City Competition."
The event took place at Mount Saint Mary's Academy, on Delaware Avenue in Tonawanda.
The theme this year was "Fuel Your Future!"
Students had to incorporate alternative energy into their city designs.
With the help of teachers and engineers, the students put their technical skills to the test.
Carol Zavatti, Regional Coordinator for the competition told Eyewitness News, "They use everything from math and the skills of science to model making, 3-D computer design, and animation...which is part of the Sim City model, which is one of the portions of the judging they have to compete for."
The winning team was from Saint Mary's in Swormville, New York.
The students named their city Iles de la Paix, which means "Island of Peace" in French. The team will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National competition.
