The root of just how the city of Buffalo was named has been a debate for hundreds of years.
While historians have not come to an agreement on one particular story, there are plenty of theories.
Cynthia Van Ness, Library/Archives Director at The BUffalo History Museum said, there are some that are less likely then others.
For example, the theory that buffalo lived or visited occasionally is not likely.
Van Ness also said, the theory that buffalo got it's name from french explorers is also unlikely.
A more likely theory, Millard Fillmore's, which talks about a mistranslation during the treaty of Fort Stanwix.
