WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. ( WKBW ) Every week, Channel 7's Mike Randall surprises a worthy educator as a "Teacher Of The Week" on "Eyewitness News This Morning."

For Friday March 30, 2012, Mike honored two teachers...Joan Johnston and Kate Munro at Maple East Elementary in Williamsville.

Joan is familiar to Channel 7 viewers and Mike Randall. Joan has helped coordinate Variety Kids Telethon donations for many years. This year she is retiring.

Here is the nomination form that tells the story of these two worthy teachers!

I would like to nominate two teachers who have worked side by side at Maple East Elementary school in Williamsville for over thirty years. Joan Johnston and Kate Munro teach second grade in adjoining rooms.

As team leaders, they have both inspired all of their colleagues with a combined total of over 80 years in education. They arrive in their classrooms before 7AM each day, preparing lessons, collaborating with other teachers, and then spending their days making learning fun, interesting and important in their students' lives.

All the children who have gone to Maple East know Mrs. Johnston as the Duck Teacher. Joan raises ducks and geese in her classroom every spring, sharing the events with all the children at Maple East. Both of these women spend their free time volunteering with children, as well. Joan has been the co-chair for the Variety Club Telethon Schools Division for many years.

Kate works with teens at her church, after spending many years volunteering at the activities of her four sons. Both of these educators have been recognized by the Williamsville PTA Council with their Service to Youth Award. Joan and Kate are both retiring this year. As a member of the second grade team, I am honored to work with Joan and Kate. Western New York deserves to learn about these two wonderful educators.
