Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WKBW) – It has been a rough winter for Debbie Hughes.

“Because the winter was so bad, I stayed in a lot,” Hughes said.

She has made good use of her time crocheting. It is a hobby has been enjoying for more than 60 years.

“I make things, I can create things and I enjoy it,” Hughes said.

Hughes was taught to crochet by her grandmother and mother when she was just a little girl. Now, she is taking her hobby to a whole new level.

“At least once a year I'd like to make things for people, not like I'm selling things. I saw the community baby shower and I though this would be a great idea,” Hughes said.

This is the third year for the United Way Community Baby shower. Hughes’ beautiful creations are already at the United Way headquarters in Buffalo, waiting to be packed up and given out to these babies who need it most.

“She does this for all of the children in the community who don't have what we all have. She has a beautiful heart and it’s her joy to help,” Suzette O’Brien with the United Way said.

Hughes said she makes clothes for premature babies to older children in colorful patters and styles. She even uses a special little model to make the clothes fit just right.

“Every once in a while if I’m making clothes for a very small baby I use my doll Bailey to make sure that it fits,” Hughes said.

The Community Baby Shower is not Debbie's first time making things for people who need it most. She has been doing it for years, one year crocheting 50 sets of mittens for children in the area. She said it is worth all the yarn, time and money to help those in need.

“I figure, if I could do something for kids, I love kids. That's why I love crocheting for them,” Hughes said.
