Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WKBW) - The Cheektowaga Police Department has spruced up their building but, as they say, it is what’s on the inside that counts. The department is receiving international recognition through the IACP.

“The international Association of Chiefs of police is an organization of 20,000 members of over 100 countries. At their annual conference, they feature 10 to 12 agencies,” Chief Dave Zack said.

Cheektowaga Police Department was one of those agencies.

The IACP then provided a production crew to make a video about the department and the town.

“This is part of their ‘Thought Leadership Film Series’. It gives us the chance to show what we've been doing here and we are showing it to international audiences,” Zack said.

Chief Zak got to talk about the department in that video. He focused on how the department has adapted to change.

“When I was a kid it was almost rural around here. Now, 40 and 50 years later it has turned into an urban center,” Zack said.

He also discussed the department’ relationship with the community. Leonard Lane is with the FATHERS organization. It's a group that helps to make Western New York communities safer places to live.

“They are actually giving community and parents the power to help fight crime. I think whenever you give the community the power it helps the police department overall,” Lane said.

Next week, Chief Zak and others from the department will head to the IACP conference in Philadelphia where their video will be shown to people from around the world. He said this is not only puts the department in the spotlight but the entire Town of Cheektowaga.

“You don't want to lose business, you don't want to lose population, you want to attract business. If you are able to market your police department in this way, it really has a positive effect on both,” Zack said.
