Lancaster, N.Y. (WKBW) - Ryan and Jason Mansell have been playing baseball for years with the Lancaster-Depew Baseball League.

“Athletics offers so much to kids. All sports but baseball in particular is a sport that gives lessons to take with them and as a parent that is what you want,” Organizers and Parent Dave Mansell said.

Their season are cut short every year because of the infamous Buffalo weather. Now, Mansell along with many other community members have implemented a plan to change that.

“We set a goal a few years ago that we would like to build an indoor facility,” Mansell said.

Now, the $1.5 million project is underway at Westwood Park. The 16,000 square feet building will be for baseball practice. The space will not be used for games. Dino Fudoli is the Town of Lancaster Supervisor and a parent of three boys who play baseball.

“The town played a role because it's on park land so we had to come up with an agreement to allow them to build on park property,” Fudoli said.

The good news it's not costing taxpayers a cent.

“Ultimately, it’s something that is being funded by the private sector, fundraisers etc. I think taxpayers like to see that stuff. Everyone can benefit but the people that don't benefit are not stuck paying the bill for it,” Fudoli said.

Although they have most of the money for the building, they still need to raise funds for the turf, equipment and other essentials for inside of the facility.

“We are looking for field sponsors, those businesses who want to put their name on the field to generate those funds,” Mansell said.

As dads both men say it's a win-win for the entire community especially the kids.

“It’s about building relationships and my kids have been playing baseball with some of their friends since they were six, seven years old,” Mansell said.
