East Aurora, N.Y. (WKBW) - Orrin L. Becker has been making jewelry since he was a little boy.
“I apprenticed under a Swiss jeweler. I now have a studio here in East Aurora and I make everything by hand,” Becker said.
Now, he and other local artists are using their talent for a good cause.
“Friends of the Knox State Park is having a Holiday Arts Festival. More than 50 artists will be on display and the money that we raise will go toward the preservation of the buildings,” Michele Conley Vogel with Friends of Knox Farm State Park said.
The state funds some of the part but it is this organization that pays for all the extras. Vogel said it costs 10's of thousands of dollars just to heat one building.
“The summer home of the Knox’s is our first priority. We need a broiler, kitchen roof,” Vogel said.
Becker said the park is important to the community.
“Certainly a great landmark and we are so fortunate to have this in East Aurora. Although it's difficult, we been working to raise the funds,” Becker said.
Besides Becker’s jewelry, there will be pottery on display and unique items including decorations made from aluminum cans. Becker said the event not only helps the park but also the artists.
“It's great exposure to have this building and bring the artist together. I think it's a great idea,’ Becker said.
Vogel said the park is truly a sight to see.
“Everybody who comes here loves this park. It's a great setting. No matter where you are in the park people enjoy it so we want to preserve it because it's part of our history,” Vogel said.
