Amherst, N.Y. (WKBW) - Going to the dentist or doctor, not everyone's favorite experience.

“When you are just sitting a lone in the room you get anxious and you tend to think about the bad things,” Patient Maeve O’Brien said.

Artist Colleen Darby wants to change that and make going to see the doctor a more pleasant experience. She already has 10 paintings going up at the University Pediatric Dentistry in Amherst.

“I'm creating 20 inspirational landscape painting and it will include roads and maps to draw the patient into the paintings. It also includes inspirational paintings,” Darby said.

“When the paintings are there you think about the right things, the happy things,” O’Brien said.

Colleen said this is all part of a Kickstarter program that helps fund art projects like this one. She hoping to fill blank walls with color and imaginations, bringing patients calm in a rather anxious situation.

“The paintings kind of hit these kids and they can relate to the paintings and we can talk to them about their habits and how they can improve their overall health,” Dr. Paul Creighton said.

Colleen has taken a month off of her day job to work on these inspirational paintings. She hopes to hang more paintings in the next few months.
She said whether your in for a teeth cleaning or something much more serious, this art can give you a peace of mind.

“A painting and creative arts can improve patient outcome. It's very meditative and if you let someone escape into their imagination, healing can occur there,” Darby said.
